Bring a document. Hear it.
ExitRead reads PDFs, articles, Markdown and notes aloud with the voices your browser provides. Files are parsed and stored in this browser - no account, no ExitRead server.

Markdown is rendered as structure; the voice reads the words, not the markers.
On this device
Parsed and stored in your browser, never sent to a server.
Speaks what you see
Headings, lists and tables, without the markup.
Keeps your place
The reading position is saved with every document.
Read it. Hear it.
Keep it on your device.
ExitRead opens a document, tidies the text and reads it back with the voices your browser already has. Files are parsed and stored in your browser - there is no account and no ExitRead server. Speech stays with the voice you choose; a voice marked local works on the device itself.
What you get
Every part of ExitRead is in the browser. Here is what the app actually does - the pictures are the interface itself.

The quiet hour
The lamp is still on and the kettle has just boiled. Outside the window the street is empty, and for a moment nothing asks to be answered.
She turns the page and reads the first line aloud, just to hear how it sounds.
The text, tidied up
Headings, lists and tables survive the import.

Import
A file, or text you paste. The format is detected by the content, not only by the file name.
Cleaned text
The lamp is still on and the kettle has just boiled. Outside the window the street is empty, and for a moment nothing asks to be answered.
Line endings normalised · repeated whitespace removed · blank lines collapsed
Clean
Line endings, repeated whitespace and empty lines are removed. The structure of the document is kept.
The lamp is still on and the kettle has just boiled. Outside the window the street is empty, and for a moment nothing asks to be answered. She turns the page and reads the first line aloud, just to hear how it sounds.
Listen
The current paragraph is marked, and the word when the voice reports it. ExitRead adds no voice service of its own.
Your documents stay on this device
ExitRead has no account, no server and no analytics. Documents are parsed in the browser and stored in the browser's own IndexedDB; ExitRead never uploads them. Speech is produced by the browser's voices. A voice marked local runs on the device; a browser-supplied voice may need a connection and is governed by the browser maker's terms. ExitRead itself has no voice service.
The file never travels
Parsing happens in the browser, on your machine, at the speed of your machine.
Speech is your browser’s
ExitRead adds no speech backend. Choose a voice marked local to keep the speech offline.
No measurement
No counters, no telemetry, no error reporting. Nothing about your reading is collected.
You can wipe it
One button in the settings removes every cached file and the service worker.
Questions
The things people ask first.
Does ExitRead upload my documents?
No. Every file is parsed in your browser and stored in the browser's own IndexedDB. There is no account, no server and no analytics, so your documents never leave the device.
Does ExitRead work without an internet connection?
Yes. The application shell and every document parser are pre-cached by the service worker. Once the app has been opened, you can import and read documents with the network switched off.
Which file formats can I read?
ExitRead reads plain text, Markdown, HTML, CSV and JSON files, PDF documents and pictures, and it accepts pasted text. A PDF with a text layer reads directly; a scanned PDF or a picture is read by the built in text recogniser, which marks where the text was found. DOCX and XLSX are not part of the plan.
Which voice reads the document?
Speech uses the Web Speech API of your browser, so the quality depends on the voices installed on your device. Voices marked as local run on the device and keep working offline. A browser-supplied voice may need a connection and is governed by the browser maker's terms; ExitRead has no voice service of its own.
Can I change the appearance?
Yes. ExitRead has a light theme and a dark theme. Until you choose one, it follows the colour scheme of your operating system. The choice is stored in a cookie in your browser and applied before the page is painted, so the colours never flash.
How do I install ExitRead as an app?
Use the Install app button in the header, or install the page from the browser menu. ExitRead then runs in its own window and starts offline.
